From the beginning, I knew one thing: if we were going to create a truly exceptional migration retreat, Robert Becker had to lead the birding.
Robert has spent years studying and guiding along the Upper Texas Coast. His ability to anticipate migration movement, identify subtle calls, and position guests at the right place at the right time is what makes this retreat special.
While Robert focuses on the birds, I focus on the experience.
I’ve spent significant time on Galveston Island, learning its rhythm—from Bolivar Flats and Smith Oaks Rookery to the quieter marshes and backroads that most visitors overlook.
Professionally, I’ve led complex operations ranging from large-scale hotel renovations to multi-team emergency response projects. Coordinating schedules, managing moving parts, and ensuring smooth execution is what I do.
That same level of planning goes into every Premier Birding Tours retreat.
Each day is carefully timed around migration patterns, “tides, traffic flow, and guest comfort—so you can focus entirely on the birds.
Robert calls the sightings.
I manage the details.
You enjoy the experience.
Interpretive Birding Guide
Robert Becker moved to Texas in 2004 and has been birding ever since. A native Pennsylvanian, he bought his first camera in 1972 and began photographing birds and other wildlife. Becker’s life list includes more than 560 avian species across Texas, Arizona, Cape May, Duluth, Minn., South Florida and around the Great Lakes. He has also birded Mexico, Honduras, Belize and Costa Rica. Becker, who resides in Galveston, is a member of the Texas Ornithological Society, Houston Audubon and Galveston Audubon group. He writes a birding blog for Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council and leads birding walks on the island. Becker holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from American University and worked as a reporter, editor and columnist for newspapers including the Houston Chronicle
Premier Birding Tours started with a guy who couldn’t keep his eyes off the sky. After years honing his skills as a lifelong birder, Bob Needham settled in Texas a decade ago near Fort Hood, where annual trips to Galveston Island turned into a deep dive—he even called the island home for six months. Drawn to its hidden backwaters and explosive migrations, Bob saw an opportunity to share his insider knowledge and conservation ethos.
Bob launched Premier Birding Tours to offer hands-on guiding that feels like adventuring with a friend. As the operation grew, it honed in on intimate, high-energy experiences that blend sharp birding know-how with easygoing hospitality. That core vibe runs through every outing: informative, fun, and all about the people as much as the birds. Over time, repeat guests keep coming back not just for the epic fallouts and 200-species, but for the way a tour turns strangers into a tight-knit crew.Today, Premier Birding Tours specializes in Galveston’s spring migration hotspots, always rooted in the idea that the best birding happens at the crack of dawn and the wild world deserves our best efforts to preserve it.
